Mr Hisham Shalaby is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising exclusively in foot and ankle surgery. Based in Edinburgh, he treats the full spectrum of foot and ankle conditions, from common painful problems to complex deformity, ankle replacement, revision surgery and reconstruction following previous unsuccessful treatment.

 

He graduated in 1996 and went on to specialise in orthopaedic surgery gaining the Master Degree in 2001, the MD Degree in 2005 and the FRCS (Tr & Orth) Degree in 2006.

His surgical training was undertaken in Cairo, Ain Shams University, Edinburgh, Royal Infirmary and St John’s Hospitals, Liverpool, Royal Liverpool Hospital and Alder Hay Children’s Hospital and Nottingham, Queen’s Medical Centre. 

During his training, he developed a special interest in Foot & Ankle Surgery and Limb Reconstruction Surgery. He developed advanced expertise in these areas during his major research project for an MD thesis on “Correction of Complex Foot & Ankle Deformities using the Ilizarov Frame”. 

In his sub-specialties, he conducted extensive research on Complex Foot deformities, Ankle Arthritis, Cartilage Reconstruction and more.  He published in international journals and attended advanced courses and meetings. 

He finished an Advanced Deformity Correction Fellowship in Liverpool and a Trauma Fellowship in Nottingham. 

In his current post, he practises across the full spectrum of Foot & Ankle surgery, including the most advanced treatment modalities like primary and revision ankle replacement, minimally invasive surgery, periarticular osteotomies, circular frames, ankle distraction and more.

Mr. Shalaby lectures nationally and internationally on many aspects of Foot and Ankle surgery and Deformity correction. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), the British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (BOFAS), the International Association for the Study and Application of the Ilizarov method (ASAMI), the British Limb Reconstruction Society (BLRS) and several other renowned specialised Orthopaedic societies. He is the past president of the Foot & Ankle Scotland Society (FASt).

He is a reviewer for several international Orthopaedic journals. He is on the faculty of several International Orthopaedic and Trauma courses.
